Trump Greenlights Debated Alaska Ambler Road Project
In a fact sheet, the White House confirmed that Trump has granted approval for the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) to move forward. The decision instructs federal agencies to "promptly issue authorizations necessary" for the construction of the 211-mile (339-kilometer) road, which will provide industrial access to the Ambler Mining District.
"This project will provide road transportation access to the Ambler Mining District," the fact sheet states.
The road, cutting through Alaska's wilderness, is deemed "in the public interest" by the Trump administration due to the need for access to critical domestic minerals, including copper, cobalt, gallium, and germanium, which are essential to various industries.
The directive also mandates that the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reissue the necessary permits to begin construction of the road.
Trump’s approval effectively reverses the Biden administration’s decision in 2024 to reject the project, a move that the White House claimed "ignored Alaska’s economic needs and national security imperatives."
